Sri Lanka is undergoing a reduction in its army cadre, aiming to reach 135,000 personnel by the end of the year and eventually 100,000 by 2030.

This downsizing, part of financial reforms, has already led to a decrease from 200,783 to nearly 150,000 army personnel.

General recruitment in the army has stopped, with recruitment for essential units only.

The Air Force has also seen a decrease to around 27,000 personnel, while the Navy maintains about 40,000.

Despite occasional strikes in various sectors, the downsizing may limit the tri-forces’ ability to engage in multitasking by 2030.
