Sri Lanka will send just five athletes to the 2024 Paris Olympics, the lowest number since 1984. Only three athletes qualified, while two swimmers received wild cards.

Unlike previous years, no track and field athletes received wild cards.

Yupun Abeykoon was entered for a wildcard but did not qualify, and he is recovering from an injury.

Tharushi Karunaratne, an Asian Games gold medallist, secured the 45th position in the ‘Road to Paris 24’ rankings and will compete in the women’s 800m race.

Javelin thrower Dilhani Lekamge improved to the 26th position and also qualified.

Two swimmers, Kyle Abeysinghe and Ganga Seneviratne, received wild cards. Shuttler Viren Nettasinghe also secured a spot.

Sri Lanka Athletics requested an Olympic berth for javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga, who has the tenth longest throw this season but did not meet qualifying standards.

The National Olympic Committee appealed to the International Olympic Committee on his behalf.
