Tamil MPs to Stage Protest in Parliament Following Arrests in Sivarathri Incident

The Chief Minister of Northern Province, Sri Lanka, Shri C.V. Vigneswaran meeting the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, at the Jaffna Public Library, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka on March 14, 2015.

Tamil Members of Parliament representing the northern and eastern regions have announced plans to stage a protest in parliament tomorrow (March 19th).

This decision comes in response to the recent arrests made during the Sivarathri celebrations at the Vanuniya Vedukkunari Sivan Kovil.

On the auspicious occasion of Sivarathri, eight individuals participating in the poojai rituals were detained by the police.

They have been charged under the archaeological act and reportedly face difficulties in obtaining bail.

Their case is scheduled to be heard before the Vavuniya Magistrate tomorrow.

Efforts to address the matter with President Ranil Wickramasinghe were met with a refusal to meet today, with a commitment to discuss the issue on Wednesday.

However, in light of this development, a Tamil MP stated that they have decided to hold a protest within the parliament premises tomorrow.
