New Inspector General of Police Assumes Duties at Sri Lanka’s Police Headquarters

Deshabandu Tennakoon has stepped into his new role as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the Sri Lanka Police Headquarters, marking the commencement of his tenure.

Appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Tennakoon, who assumes the prestigious position as the 36th IGP, brings with him a wealth of experience garnered over a 25-year career within the Sri Lankan Police force.

Born in 1971, Tennakoon embarked on his policing journey in 1998 as an apprentice Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Throughout his career, he has exhibited dedication and leadership, culminating in his recent appointment.

His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colombo and a Master’s degree from the University of Kelaniya, underscoring his commitment to academic excellence alongside his professional endeavors.

Prior to assuming the role of IGP, Tennakoon served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) overseeing the Western Province.
